A Pathfinder Instrument for Precision Radial Velocities in the Near-Infrared

چکیده
We have designed and tested an in-plane echelle spectrograph configured to investigate precision radial velocities from ground-based near-infrared observations. The spectrograph operates across the spectral range of 0.9–1.7 μm at a spectral resolution of R 1⁄4 50; 000, and uses a liquid nitrogen-cooled HAWAII 1 K detector. Repeated measurements of the Earth’s rotation via integrated sunlight with two different instrument arrangements in the near-infrared Y band have produced radial velocities with ∼10 ms 1 rms over a period of several hours. The most recent instrument configuration has achieved an unbinned rms of 7 ms 1 and suggests that infrared radial velocity precisions may be able to approach those achieved at optical wavelengths. Radial Velocity Observations of L Dwarfs
We report on the development of a technique for precise radial-velocity measurements of cool stars and brown dwarfs in the near infrared. Our technique is analogous to the Iodine (I2) absorption cell method that has proven so successful in the optical regime. We rely on telluric CH4 absorption features to serve as a wavelength reference, relative to which we measure Doppler shifts of the CO and...
متن کاملOn the Use of Absorption Cells as a Wavelength Reference for Precision Radial Velocity Measurements in the near Infrared
Considerable interest is now focused on the detection of terrestrial mass planets around M dwarfs, and radial velocity surveys with high-resolution spectrographs in the near infrared are expected to be able to discover such planets. We explore the possibility of using commercially available molecular absorption gas cells as a wavelength reference standard for high-resolution fiber-fed spectrogr...
متن کاملInfrared radial velocities of vB 10
We present radial velocities of the M8V-type, very low-mass star vB 10 that have been obtained at four different epochs of observations between 2001 and 2008. We use high-resolution (R∼ 20,000) near-infrared (J-band) spectra taken with the nirspec instrument on the Keck II telescope. Our data suggest that vB 10 shows radial velocity variability with an amplitude of ∼1 km s−1, a result that is c...
متن کاملDetecting Planets around Very Low Mass Stars with the Radial Velocity Method
The detection of planets around very low-mass stars with the radial velocity method is hampered by the fact that these stars are very faint at optical wavelengths where the most high-precision spectrometers operate. We investigate the precision that can be achieved in radial velocity measurements of low mass stars in the near infrared (nIR) Y -, J-, and H-bands, and we compare it to the precisi...
متن کاملAn Inexpensive Field-widened Monolithic Michelson Interferometer for Precision Radial Velocity Measurements
We have constructed a thermally compensated field-widened monolithic Michelson interferometer that can be used with a medium-resolution spectrograph to measure precise Doppler radial velocities of stars. Our prototype monolithic fixed-delay interferometer is constructed with off-the-shelf components and assembled using a hydrolysis bonding technique. We installed and tested this interferometer ...
